In the early mining towns the local gossip was about mining and prospecting (and the folks who did it!) Researching old newspaper articles is a great way to find out what type of prospecting has occurred in your favorite areas.
Ever used Google News Archive Search?
This is a great way to get to some old newspaper archives. They don't allow you to download copies and they don't provide a browse function. But by running a search you can get a lot of good information.
Try this. I know that they have some early "Prescott Journal Miner" newspapers in the archive.
Go to the Google News Archives advanced search. Enter as follows;

You will get a list of results. Pick one.....I picked this one.
